The community is named for Commodore Isaac Mayo (1791-1861). Commodore Mayo’s historic residence Gresham is located in Mayo. The Commodore was a US Naval War Hero, the Captain of the USS Constitution and most famous for his resignation from the US Navy in May 1861 at the onset of the Civil War.
Known locally as the Land of Pleasant Living, Mayo has developed from a beach resort community into a bedroom community for the Washington Baltimore Metropolitian Area. Mayo is a wonderful example of the fantastic quality of life available on the Shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
Situated south of Annapolis, Maryland on the Mayo Peninsula, Mayo is at the end of MD Route 214. Mayo is surrounded on north and east by the South River, on the southeast by the Chesapeake Bay and on the south and southwest by the West and Rhode Rivers. The Mayo Peninsula covers a land area of 1622 acres and a water area of 1375 acres, with a population of approximately 8,298 people.
